Barbara Drugan “Miss Barbara” began her student teaching in 1946 at Montrose kindergarten while taking classes at OSU. The following year she was invited to teach kindergarten at Montrose. The problem was that new teachers had to have two years’ experience. She had just graduated with a degree in elementary education and had none. But Jack Richardson, President of the Board, said, “She has loved kids all her life; that’s worth two years’ experience, right?” She says she still remembers those words. During 1947 and 1948 Miss Barbara worked and learned from Isabel Miller and Ann Verba, two examples of very fair, fine teachers of five-year-olds and her. At this time all children in the Bexley area came to Montrose for kindergarten. The divinity students car-pooled the north and central Bexley children to the school. In 1950, Miss Barbara moved to Cassingham Elementary and opened the first kindergarten there. She remained there until her retirement in 1979. She still regularly attends Bexley’s football and basketball games and will be found on Fridays at the corner of Fair and Cassingham. She says she is the patrol guard with the jacket, a big stop sign, white hair, and a big smile for everyone. |
