Mary Ahlborn Snyder – Newport NC

I just returned from a trip to Italy and Greece with a group of my students. Only one more year until retirement. I am teaching high school art and enjoying eastern North Carolina. Most of all, I am enjoying my granddaughter, Meaghan. This is my last year of being president of the Eastern North Carolina Rose Society. We have a rose garden of 800 roses and do a yearly rose show and art show. My husband of 41 years will be retiring as a professor of English at Eastern North Carolina University next year and we hope to travel back to Ohio.

Class of ‘62 travels to Tuscany and Sorrento for reunion

Thirteen of us, seven 1962 classmates and assorted spouses and friends, spent two weeks in Italy this spring, staying one week each in villas in Tuscany and Sorrento.

Our 12-bedroom Tuscan country villa, a 100 year-old former winery just south of Siena in the Commune of Monteroni d’Arbia, looked out upon rolling hills dotted with grazing herds of sheep.  We left the villa each morning for destinations including small, walled medieval hill-top towns hundreds of years old, larger towns like Florence and Siena, and winding routes with incredible patchwork quilt views of hills in multiple shades of green and tan, dotted with olive trees, grape vines and spectacular towering cypress trees.  Returning to our villa at night we enjoyed chats in front of the fireplace.  Amazingly, we were almost always able to eat together in restaurants and a favorite was in the ancient village of San Gimignano, where we had a long table overlooking gorgeous layer upon layer of green hills in the distance.

The second week was spent in a large 100 year-old family town villa overlooking the Mediterranean near Sorrento, Naples, and the Isle of Capri.  The ride down the Amalfi coast is breathtaking and the village of Positano with narrow paths winding down past elegant tiny shops to the beach and open-air cafes on the beach is picture perfect.  We enjoyed lunch high atop the hill on the Isle of Capri, looking down on yachts in the Marina far below and shopping the narrow streets (no cars here).  Breakfasts were great on our large 3rd floor terrace under 50 foot trees in the garden below; a garden that included several chickens and many lemon and orange trees.

Many of us then toured Rome for one day and some extended their visit to Venice or the Italian Riviera.  If you missed it, you just should have been there.  Those classmates who went were Carol Miley Middaugh (OH), Susan Murray Newman (MI), Peggy Gregg Jackson (FL), Barry Kayne (DE), Sharon Downard (OH), Sondra Schwartz (CA), and Diane Borror Richardson (VA).
