Jewish Family Services has announced that Cheri Papier will receive this year’s Janice B. Ballas Award at their annual meeting, Oct. 24 at 7:30 p.m., at the Columbus Museum of Art. Papier is being honored for her numerous contributions to the Jewish community and the community at large. She is an accomplished musician who frequently entertains at the Heritage House, Jewish Community Center, local synagogues, Lutheran Village and other venues. In addition to her musical abilities, Papier is a Reiki practitioner, with a background in public health education and epidemiology Her booklet, "Be a Quitter," about how to quit smoking, has been widely distributed in the United States and Israel. Papier was a 1996 Olympic Torch runner, and in 1997 received the Columbus Dispatch Volunteer Award. She has helped coach JCC Youth Maccabi groups in table tennis, assisted new Americans, and worked with Kiwanis clubs in fundraising activities for children. Other award recipients will include Karen Heiser, JFS Board Trustee of the Year; Beth Gerber, Staff Member of the Year; and Honey Abramson, Volunteer of the Year.
