(This
article, reprinted with permission, featuring Dean Browne, class of
1941, and Bexley's unbeaten football team his senior year, appeared in
the Columbus Dispatch on May 16, 2001)
By John Switzer I was talking with Dean Browne of
Columbus the other day when he told me about his 60th high-school
class reunion this month. Browne is one of my favorite
woodcarvers. I collect carved birds, and he turns out some beauties. He said the Bexley class of 1941 will
be celebrating on Friday and Saturday Browne recalled how in his senior
year the Bexley football team was unbeaten — never even scored upon! The team did, however, have to settle
for a 0-0 tie with Washington Court House. It sounds strange now, but that
season Bexley beat the pants off the likes of Upper Arlington,
Westerville and Worthington. Those communities were much smaller
back then. In those days, Upper Arlington and neighboring Grandview
Heights were rivals. All those teams belonged to the old Central
Buckeye League. “We wore leather helmets back
then,” Browne said, halfway kidding. Actually, he did wear a
leather helmet as a freshman. He was a fullback and the team
captain. Here are the scores from that
wonderful season: Bexley 19, Worthington 0; Bexley 6,
Logan 0; Bexley 26, Rosary 0; Bexley 14, Grandview Heights 0; Bexley
44, Delaware 0; Bexley 27, Upper Arlington 0; Bexley 24, Academy 0;
Bexley 39, Westerville 0; and Bexley 0, Washington Court House, 0. It’s pretty unbelievable to have a season when the opposition doesn’t score a single point. No matter how good you are, somebody is bound to break a big play and cross the goal line. |
