BEXLEY IN THE NEWS (This article, reprinted with permission, featuring the first Bexley House & Garden Tour, appeared in Bexley News on June 10, 2008) 6/16/08
The Bexley Women's Club will spotlight various house designs with its
June 22 tour.
The Bexley Women's Club, which is hosting the event, has centered the tour around Bexley's centennial celebration this year. The Women's Club is an organization of around 225 members who strive to provide scholarships to high school students in Bexley and college undergraduate students around the country. All proceeds from the tour will go toward future scholarships, said Paige Bilotta, House & Garden Tour chairwoman. From 4 to 8:30 p.m. June 21, the Women's Club will host an invitation-only gala at the Ohio Governor's Residence and Heritage Garden, 358 N. Parkview Ave., with a message from Ohio's First Lady Frances Strickland. Gala guests will take a private tour of the featured residences and gardens, and will enjoy cocktails and hors d'oeuvres at the Bexley Gateway complex, corner of Parkview Avenue and East Main Street. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 22, the public can walk through the designated residences and gardens by purchasing tour tickets. Participants will receive a program book that will give descriptions of the houses and volunteers will be in each house to share more information. "The houses on this tour are so diverse, and there are so many contrasts," Bilotta said. "We wanted to show the course of living in Bexley for over 100 years. Bexley is not just 1920 Tudors, but (also) the mid-century house, a cottage built in 1908, a farmhouse, a brand new house finished in 2006." Homes and gardens in the tour are: * 46 N. Parkview Ave., formerly Camp Bushnell and Dougherty Mansion, thought to be the oldest house in Bexley; * 460 S. Drexel Ave., one of the first Bexley farmhouses; * 400 S. Parkview Ave., French-style mansion completed in 2006; * 399 S. Parkview Ave., house built in 1918; * 107 N. Columbia Ave., 1929 English manor style home with a garden; * 260 N. Columbia Ave., house with hand-carved Black Forest wood with a garden; * 17 Meadow Park, modern home with appliances dating back to 50 years; * 358 N. Parkview Ave., Heritage Garden at the Governor's Residence; * 445 N. Parkview Ave., garden featuring Japanese maples, knot gardens, roses, weeping hemlocks; * 15 Sessions Drive and 21 Sessions Drive, two Sessions Village gardens; "The event is full of a lot of surprises, and people even within Bexley might be surprised of some of the places in their back yard that they never noticed before," she said. The Women's Club has awarded more than $325,000 to around 700 students since the club started in 1937, and recently gave a combined sum of $13,750 in scholarships to high school students in Bexley and college undergraduate students in May, Women's Club President Lisa Baas said. In addition to helping with this cause, the tour will show the public what a diverse group of women are in the club, Bass said. "This is going to bring a new awakening to Bexley as many people don't know we exist, and those who do know we exist, might not know what we do. People will begin to understand that we are really out there and helping people," Baas said. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 the day of the tour. Tickets may be purchased at bexleywomen.org, Mozart's Bakery, 2152 E. Main St.; First Bexley Bank, 2680 E. Main St.; and Bexley Recreation Department at Jeffrey Mansion, 165 N. Parkview Ave. Tickets may also be purchased from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 22 at the Columbus School for Girls, 56 S. Columbia Ave. |
