Rahel Adugna Honored as National Achievement Scholar

Rahel AdugnaBexley High School senior Rahel Adugna has earned recognition as a National Achievement Scholar.  The National Merit Scholarship Corporation sponsors the National Achievement Scholarship Program, an academic competition honoring outstanding Black American high school students.

Some 160,000 students enter the National Achievement® Program each year, with a group of about 3,100 Outstanding Participants “referred to colleges for their potential for academic success,” according to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation web site.  A smaller group of about 1,600 are named Semifinalists and have an opportunity to advance in the competition for National Achievement Scholarships.

Black students enter both the National Achievement Program and the National Merit® Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test and meeting other requirements for participation.  Ms. Adugna is also a National Merit Commended Scholar this year.

The daughter of Woldermariam Adugna and Kindie Anchinalu, Ms. Adugna participated in the Leadership Bexley program as a junior.  She is a member of the Speech and Debate team and has run track for all four of her years in high school.  She has served as a peer tutor in math and worked on the Bexleo yearbook staff.  The National Honors Society and Cum Laude Society inducted Ms. Adugna as a member.

“I might possibly major in Biochemistry next year because I am interested into going into Pre-med so that I can hopefully go to med school and become a doctor,” she said.  “I am not sure where I will be attending school next year. Among my current choices, if I have the privilege of being admitted, are Washington University in St. Louis, University of Chicago, Northwestern, University of Michigan and OSU.”
