Retired Grocer

Fred attended the grade school at College and Main through the sixth grade and graduated from the High School at Main and Montrose. His three younger sisters and both his son and his daughter are also BHS grads.

Fred worked at Paul's Food Shoppe during his Senior year and for five years following his graduation. He learned meat cutting from his father who wholesaled and retailed meats on Sheridan Ave. and the East Market and in 1936, with his parents' help, he purchased a small grocery on Arcadia Ave.

In 1942 he was drafted into the army and served four years, returning home January 2, 1946. He opened Schiefer's Market at Kenwick and Main in April of that year and prospered there until his retirement in 1979.

Fred is a past President and Honorary member of the Central Ohio Retail Grocers Association and Chairman of the Grocers Association Past Presidents Club.
