The National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) has awarded the
Bexley High School TORCH the "All-American" designation for work during the 2005-06 school year.  In addition, the TORCH received special "Marks of Distinction" in all five areas of judging: coverage and content;
writing and editing; photography, art and graphics; layout and design;
and leadership.

A nonprofit membership organization for secondary school publications
such as yearbooks, newspapers, magazines, broadcast programs, and online publications, the NSPA offers its members resources to help their
publications improve.  The organization also hosts national high school
journalism conventions and contests.

NSPA judge Anne Whitt said of the TORCH: "This gorgeous paper shows so much staff pride in creating a medium for students at this school.  The school must be very proud of its paper.  The staff has shown great
ability in finding stories and presenting them enticingly."

Participation on the Torch staff offers one of Bexley High School's
co-curricular programs of distinction.  Students who have completed the
English Department's Journalism course have the opportunity to serve as reporters, editors, photographers, business and computer staff.  The
2005-2006 staff of 50 students was led by co-editors Rachel Haas,
Caitlin Wenz and Lauren Kraus and advised by Julie Horger, BHS English
teacher.

Bexley High School has once again earned the Ohio High School Athletic Association's Harold A. Meyer Sportsmanship, Ethics, and Integrity Award.  According to Bexley Athletic Director John Morgan, the award recognizes schools with a comprehensive program in place to promote sportsmanship, ethics, and integrity among athletes, students, parents, fans, and community.  Receiving the honor for the fourth consecutive year, Bexley High School is one of only 101 Ohio high schools cited for 2005 - 2006.

In addition, Mr. Morgan reported that, this fall, 315 Bexley High School students are competing on a school athletic team.  That figure represents 40% of the 787-member student body at Bexley High School. "This is an incredible percentage of participation, especially when compared to larger schools where 10-15% is common," noted Mr. Morgan. "When you figure in the students who are in other extra-curricular activities, you can see that our students are impressively involved!"

Bexley Schools consider extracurricular experiences as an important part of each student's education; they are designed to provide a broad range of opportunities for students to explore and develop their talents and interests.
