Bill attended Bexley schools from kindergarten through twelfth
grade, graduating in 1961.
He received a Bachelor of Science in physical education, health and
economics from Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Florida and a
Masters Degree in educational administration from The Ohio State
University.
Bill taught physical education at Bexley Middle School for 36 years,
also teaching science and health during his tenure there. He is
currently serving as a teacher assistant, working with students who
have special needs.
Bill had an illustrious coaching career, both at the middle and high
school level. Beginning in 1967, he coached middle school football
and boys basketball. In 1968 he added middle school track. In 1970
he became the high school defensive coordinator, serving in that
capacity until 1980 when he became head coach of the high school
boys and girls cross country team, with a record of 196 wins and 48
losses and earning six league, two district and two regional
championships by 1992. During that time seven teams and seven
individuals were state qualifiers. He was named District Coach of
the Year three times.
He served as assistant high school boys track coach for three years,
beginning in 1979, followed by four years as head high school boys
coach from 1982 to 1985. The teams won two league championships
during that time, with one 3200 relay team state championship.
In 1972 he began 13 years as the high school boys JV basketball
coach; taking over as varsity head coach from 1997 until 2004.
During that time he recorded 298 wins vs. 102 losses and captured
along the way five league, four sectional and one district
championship and two district runners-up. He was named league coach
of the year five times and district coach of the year once.
From 1984 until 1997 Bill was the girls varsity basketball head
coach with a record of 220 wins and 72 losses. During those 13 years
his teams won 10 league, 12 sectional and 5 district championships.
They were district runners-up three times. He was named league coach
of the year four times and district coach of the year five times.
Bill was named Bexley Citizen of the Year in 2004, the same year he
received the Lou Berliner Award.
The Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Assn. awarded Bill a clock
and plaque for reaching 330 varsity wins and presented him with the
Arnzen Award for serving over 20 years at Bexley.
The Bexley Middle School gymnasium now bears the name, the Bill
Hoyer Gymnasium, guaranteeing that his name in Bexley athletics will
not be forgotten.
Bill has served as area chairman of both the American Heart Assn.
and the American Lung Assn. He served as co-chair of the Bexley
Education Foundation Alumni Piazza drive and currently serves as
area chairman of the March of Dimes.
He has been involved with Bexley Recreation’s basketball and
softball leagues and youth football and Little League baseball, the
Maccabi Games, Bexley Celebrations Assn., Senior Olympic track meet,
Bexley men's tennis team and the Bexley School District Athletic
Council. He was assistant manager of the Bexley swimming pool and
director of the Bexley basketball camp. He is a life member of the
Bexley Boosters and has been a member of the District 10 Basketball
Coaches Assn. Administrative Board for over 25 years, having served
as secretary-treasurer and president. He also serves as an OSU
Athletic Committeeman.
He is an active member of Bexley United Methodist Church, currently
serving as head usher and coordinator and a member of the
Hospitality Committee. He has served on the church’s Administrative
Board and Finance Committee.
Bill and his wife Barbara will celebrate their 40th wedding
anniversary on June 12, 2005. They have two sons, both of whom
graduated from Bexley; Bill in 1986 and Scott in 1987. They also
have six grandchildren, all of whom are Bexley students.
Bill’s parents, William B. Hoyer and Ann Altmaier Hoyer (deceased
January, 2005) are also Bexley graduates.
